SYSTEMS 2002 – Concluding remarks: decline in visitors and exhibitors

In the face of the generally hard economical times especially in IT and communication
branches, the SYSTEMS clearly experienced a decline in visitors (-32%) and
exhibitors (-25%). 1600 companies presented their novelties. Despite the difficult
initial situation the exhibitors were content. They were able to contact a large number
of top managers among the approximately 80,000 visitors (in 2002: 117,000 visitors
according to the FKM count).
" We collected high-quality leads, our expectations were fulfilled", commented
Andreas Schulze, Marketing Manager of Adito, on the course of the fair. Norbert
Dorn, Advertising manager of Kindermann commented: "The first three days were
not too bad- if things continue like this until Friday, we will be quite content. However we had hoped for more dialogue with the specialized trade dealers."

After last year’s SYSTEMS the course of business in IT and Telecommunication
branches drastically declined (39% of the exhibitors perceive the contemporary
economic situation as poor, in 2001 there were only 23%). This year at the SYSTEMS
there was a mood swing: 47% perceived the SYSTEMS 2002 as being excellent or
good. Last year this percentage lay at 43%. This was underpined by a current visitor
survey conducted by the NFO, which stated that the SYSTEMS 2002 could clearly
improve in all relevant areas: approximately 90% of the specialized visitors are those
who make decisions (in 2001: 86%), 49% have leading positions (in 2001: 45%) and
30% are from the management ( in 2001: 24%). Among 30% of the SYSTEMS-
Professionals have an investment volume of over 100,000 €, more than 55% do not visit any other IT trade fair. The
SYSTEMS 2003 took place between 20th and 24th October 2003 at the “Neue Messe Munich”.

As the first manufacturer of plasma
displays, Fujitsu General received the
EMMY Award for the production
series of PLASMAVISION
Plasmadisplays. The award was
presented by U.S. "National
Association of Television Arts and
Sciences" (NATAS). The exact title
of the award was: "2002 Scientific
Development and Technological
Achievement EMMY Award", and
merits the longstanding technical
development and achievements of the American television
industry. The background for the choice of Fujitsu General
PLASMAVISION Displays as the winner of this year’s awards
was the longstanding development and marketing of
plasmadisplays, which began long before the first 21” Fujitsu
Plasma color display (1993) and took its course with 42”
color- plasmas (1996) and the high resolution ALIS plasmas
(1999). In 2001 Fujitsu General introduced AVM (Advanced
Video Movement) Technology, which ensures highest image
quality for the Fujitsu Plasmavision devices. The EMMY
Award is an incentive to continue offering innovative solutions
in the future in the field of large format, flat plasma displays.

4) HP: xb31 and sb21 are available in Europe
With two new devices HP is extending their product range for the growing projector
market. The two new devices are especially advanced in the fields of light performance and
weight: The HP projector xb31 and the HP projector sb21 easily fit into all hand baggage
and deliver bright and sharp images, charts, videos and sketches. Equipped with a 150-Watt
high performance lamp the HP projector xb31 achieves 1,500 ANSI lumens. With only one
kilogram, the HP projector sb21 is an ideal mobile presentation device. The lightweight
under the projectors needs a space comparable to a DIN A5 sheet and offers a light intensity of 1,000 ANSI lumens. Both
devices employ TI´s DLP technology and present images with 16.7 million deep colors and a contrast ratio of 1,800:1.
These models which are designed for business travellers will be available starting November at specialized dealer stores.

Toshiba’s line of Professional Visual Products is extending their portfolio. The two novelties T50 (XGA) and S30 (SVGA)
are well suited for mobile operations as well as for conference and school environments. With a weight of only 2.3 kg they
have a brightness of 1,400 ANSI lumens and a contrast ratio of 400:1. Both LCD projectors are equipped with keystone
correction of +/- 15 degrees, which can be operated either manually or automatically. The integrated Auto-Off function
enables the machine to switch itself off at a certain time after it has not been used for a while. The infrared remote control as
well as a newly designed menu with icons encourages an even easier operation of the devices with fewer problems. The
ECO-Mode spares the projection lamp and decreases the quiet ventilator sound. The T50 (suggested retail price: 3816,40 €)
and the S30 (suggested retail price 2540,40 €) are available starting November at distributors and specialized trade dealers.

6) GretagMacbeth: color calibration for beamers
The newest addition to the award winning Eye-One color management system is the Eye-One
Beamer. The Eye-One Beamer allows presenters to quickly and automatically adjust the color
on digital projectors to accurately replicate the colors they intended. The Eye-One Beamer
package works in conjunction with the Eye-One handheld spectral measuring device that reads
color from all sources and on all types of monitors and a USB cable that connects the device to
a computer. It provides a portable and easy-to-use color management solution for calibrating
and color correcting digital projection devices using ICC profiles. Furthermore the package also
includes the new Eye-One Beamer holder for positioning the Beamer on a projector, so that the
temperature can be read directly in front of the lens. Included is a color management software
CD as well. The Eye-One Beamer will be available starting in December 2002.

7) Metz: First- and Second vote for Metz KRETA 63
Already in September 120 Metz TVs were installed in the German Parliament. After the official advertisement of the job
profile it became clear that the individual and convertible Metz TVs would be ideal. Special attention was given to the
retrofitting capability of the DVB-T modules. By the year 2003 the analog reception will be substituted by a digital one in
Berlin and in the surrounding area. This is no problem for Metz TVs – they can easily be retrofitted by a specialist dealer
with a DVB-T socket module. Therefore a digital reception without a Set-Top Box is possible. Another advantage: no
further remote controls are necessary. Especially the KRETA 63 was very impressive, because it offers this merit for a
screen size of only 63 cm (only 59cm are visible). The nearest CE specialist dealer will take care of current software
updates. In Berlin it is already certain that more appliances are soon to follow.

8) 3M: MP 7750/7650 – luminous, light, extremely quiet
These are the advantages of the new 3M MP 7750 and the MP 7650! They are ideal for both mobile and stationary
operations. With 1,800 ANSI lumens both the XGA-variation MP 7750 as well as the SVGA-model MP 7650 offer
incredible brightness. Both model variations weigh only 2,7kg. Of special interest is the new optimised wide-angle lens as
well as its very low noise level of only 32db ("Whisper Mode"). The MP 7750 and the MP 7650 can be positioned variably
to the screen thanks to the vertical and horizontal keystone correction.

10) Philips: the new Garbo Matchline Home Entertainment Projector
Philips is introducing the Garbo Matchline onto the home entertainment market. The projector, which is based on the
concept of last month’s introduced Garbo ( look at AVP-N. #41/02 ), offers an even higher brightness level (1,100 ANSI lumens with a contrast ratio of 500:1) as well as extensive furnishings. Like the Garbo, the Garbo Matchline is also a
projector, which you practically cannot hear but like to watch; with its 16:9 resolution the projector is with its 27dB the
quietest projector in its class and ensures crisp and sparkling images. Super long-lasting lamp- life up to 6000 hours means
the longest lamplife in the industry. Thanks to the ColourTracking™ feature, the appropriate settings are always chosen.
Due to the Garbo’s many interfaces, it can be adapted to suit anyone’s personal requirements: component-input with Cinch,
S-Video, composite and VGA per D-Sub lets users choose the best connection. With the additional ability of processing

- KAROW TV: Germany / Farör – Performance in its best quality
All of the 40,000 spectators were of the same opinion when the spotlights in the AWD-Arena in Hannover went out. It was
impressive. What they meant was not the boring match of the German national soccer team but the 44 m² video display with
the 15mm LED Technology by KAROW TV. Even the responsible people of the DFB (German Soccer Association) spoke
of absolute high quality. In other stadiums there are normally 35mm technologies used which are not able to display such
high contrast and resolution rates. One thing that even underlined the high brightness of the display was the fact that it was
placed right above the lowest point of the stadiums edge. Even with bright daylight, the LED Wall showed a brilliant image.
Later when it was dark, the sky formed a black passepartout that underlined the colours of the display. “Like a huge
television” was the unanimous opinion. Many of the spectators would have probably preferred to stay at home in front of
their own TV- if they would have been able to assume the end of the match.
